Yadkin County, NC Permits for Metal Carports and Garages

North Carolina

Yes, Yadkin County lists a carport as its own line on the permitting fee schedule, so a metal carport generally needs a building permit, and the county's zoning rules call for a Zoning Compliance Permit for accessory structures too. Both are handled by Yadkin County Central Permitting on East Elm Street in Yadkinville, which issues building permits for the county and the towns inside it. The current fee schedule, effective July 1, 2026, shows $100 for a Yadkin County carport permit. The zoning side matters just as much here, since accessory buildings normally have to sit in the rear yard.

When a permit is required

  • Carports: The permitting fee schedule lists a carport at $100.
  • Detached garages: A detached garage is charged $0.10 per square foot on the same schedule.
  • Storage buildings: A storage building for private residential storage only is listed at $50 for the building only, and a site-built storage building at $100 up to 1,000 square feet plus $0.10 for each additional square foot.
  • Zoning Compliance Permit: Section 111-32(a)(2) of the Yadkin County Zoning Ordinance says no building or structure, including accessory structures, may be started without a zoning permit, and that permit is void after six months unless substantial progress has been made.
  • Small buildings: N.C. G.S. 160D-1110 can exempt an accessory building with no dimension over 12 feet from a building permit, but the county's zoning permit rule still covers accessory structures, so ask before you skip it.

Zoning and setbacks

The county's residential Zoning Compliance Permit application covers accessory structures and says they must be located in the rear yard. Detached carports and garages may also go in the side yard if they meet the setbacks for the main house. In residential districts the application lists minimum accessory setbacks of 12 feet from the side and 15 feet from the rear property line, while principal structures need 40 feet in front, 15 feet on the sides and 25 feet in the rear. The application also asks about streams, buffers and watershed impervious surface, and Planning oversees flood damage prevention and watershed protection.

What to bring

  • A completed residential Zoning Compliance Permit application with your parcel ID (PIN)
  • A site plan drawn to scale showing the lot, existing and proposed buildings, and the distance from the new building to each property line
  • A list of existing structures on the lot and any stream or buffer information
  • Building size and the manufacturer's drawings for the carport or garage
  • The residential building permit application, or the Work Done by Owner form if you are building it yourself

Farm buildings

A building used only for a bona fide farm may be exempt from a building permit in county jurisdiction under N.C. G.S. 160D-903. Yadkin County has a Farm Exemption from Zoning Regulation Authorization form, which cites G.S. 160D-903 and asks for your parcel ID, acreage, a description of the proposed use and your Farm Tax ID number. The fee schedule still lists electrical permits for farm service, bulk barns and poultry houses, so electrical work on a farm building is still permitted.

Good to know

Central Permitting is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, but its Central Permitting page says no permits are issued after 4:30 p.m. Applications can be emailed to permitting@yadkincountync.gov, and inspections are requested by phone at 336-849-7905 with your permit number, with next-day requests called in by 5 p.m. The county posts a sample site plan you can follow when drawing yours. Planning also publishes a floodplain management flyer, which is worth a look if your lot is near the Yadkin River or a creek. If the land is inside a town's limits, check with the town on zoning before you apply.

Common questions

Do I need a permit for a carport in Yadkin County?
Yes in most cases. The county fee schedule lists a carport at $100, and accessory structures need a Zoning Compliance Permit. A carport with no side over 12 feet can be exempt from the building permit under state law, but the zoning permit can still apply, so call Central Permitting at 336-849-7905.

Do I need a permit for a metal garage or shed in Yadkin County?
Yes. A detached garage is charged $0.10 per square foot and a residential storage building $50, and both need zoning approval. Plan to place it in the rear yard at least 12 feet from the side line and 15 feet from the rear line in a residential district.

Can a carport go beside my house in Yadkin County?
The residential zoning application allows detached carports and garages in the side yard only if they meet the setbacks for the main house. Otherwise accessory structures go in the rear yard.
