Person County, NC Permits for Metal Carports and Garages
In Person County, a metal garage or accessory building goes through the Inspection Department, and the county lists accessory buildings, garages and pre-fab buildings placed on a lot on its permit fee schedule. Before Building Inspections will issue any permit, you need sign-off from zoning and, if you're on a septic system or well, from Environmental Health. For a Person County carport permit, call the Inspection Department at 336-597-0570 to confirm, because carports aren't named separately. One office handles permits for both the county and the City of Roxboro, but zoning is split between the two.

When a permit is required
- The Person County Inspection Department enforces building, plumbing, electrical and mechanical codes in Person County and the City of Roxboro.
- The county's fee schedule lists accessory buildings (unfinished walls and finished walls), garages (finished and unfinished) and pre-fab buildings placed on a lot.
- Building Inspections will not issue a permit without approval from zoning and, where it applies, Environmental Health.
- Construction is inspected to the North Carolina State Building Code (currently the 2018 edition).
Zoning and setbacks
Zoning approval depends on where the lot is. Inside Roxboro city limits, it comes from City of Roxboro planning (336-322-6018). Outside city limits, it comes from Person County Planning & Zoning (336-597-1750), which also handles state-mandated watershed protection. If the property isn't on municipal water and sewer, the county says to start with Environmental Health (336-597-1790) for well and septic approval. The county doesn't post accessory setback numbers on its permit pages, so ask Planning for your lot's setbacks before you set the building.
What to bring
- General Information Sheet and completed Building Permit Application
- Signatures from every contractor on the job, or the Owner's Affidavit if you're doing the work yourself
- Zoning approval (county or City of Roxboro) and Environmental Health approval if you're on well or septic
- Duke Premise ID number if Duke Energy is your power company
- Plans or drawings and a scope of work, if applicable
Farm buildings
Under N.C. G.S. 160D-903, county zoning can't regulate property used for bona fide farm purposes in the county's jurisdiction. Person County's fee schedule still lists a "Farm Accessory Building (Elec. Only)" electrical fee, which shows that wiring a farm building still needs an electrical permit. Ask the Inspection Department what proof of farm status they want.
Good to know
You can email Building Inspections at inspections@personcountync.gov. The county's Planning page has a single online permit application that routes to Environmental Health, City Planning, County Planning and Building Inspections. A lien agent entry number is required on larger projects, and the county won't process the application without it when it applies. The Inspections fee schedule also lists a minimum fee and a charge for beginning work without a permit.
