Greene County, NC Permits for Metal Carports and Garages

North Carolina

A Greene County carport permit comes from Planning & Inspections in Snow Hill, which runs both zoning and building inspections from one office. You apply online through the county's OpenGov permitting portal, and the building permit application includes zoning approval, so you don't file a separate zoning application. The county adopted its current Building Code Enforcement Ordinance on June 21, 2021.

Permit office: Greene County Planning & Inspections Department

When a permit is required

  • Building permits for new construction in the county go through the Greene County Online Portal and Permitting site.
  • Zoning approval is built into the building permit application, so one application covers both.
  • NC rules may exempt an accessory building with no dimension over 12 feet from a building permit. Call 252-747-4019 to check how Greene County treats a small shed or carport.
  • A building permit won't be issued until the contractor's information has been submitted and verified.

Zoning and setbacks

Planning & Inspections handles zoning, floodplain management and E-911 addressing for Greene County. The planning page lists a $25 zoning fee for all residential uses and $50 for non-residential or commercial uses. Site plans may be required depending on the size and location of your property. Setback numbers aren't posted on the county web pages, so ask the planning office or check the county Zoning Ordinance. For flood zones, the inspections page points to the NC floodplain mapping site at ncfloodmaps.com.

What to bring

  • The site address, or a pin on the portal map if no address is assigned yet
  • Property owner name and contact information (and mailing address if you are not the owner)
  • Contractor name, license number, mailing address and email
  • Drawings for new construction as PDF files
  • A site plan, if the county asks for one based on your lot size and location

Farm buildings

A building used only for a bona fide farm may be exempt from a building permit in county jurisdiction under N.C. G.S. 160D-903. Greene County does not post a farm exemption form online, so call Planning & Inspections to ask what proof of farm use they accept. Electrical work in a farm building still needs a permit.

Good to know

Apply, pay and track your permit on the Greene County Online Portal and Permitting site, and your permit comes to you by email. The county says permit and application fees are non-refundable. Building fees are on the 2024 Building Inspection Fee Schedule linked from the Building Inspections page. The office is open Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm. The county also posts a Temporary Power Request form and a Mobile Home Process sheet on that page.
