Granville County, NC Permits for Metal Carports and Garages

North Carolina

A Granville County carport permit follows the county's four-step process for accessory buildings: zoning permit, health department approval if you're on well or septic, plans, then the building permit application. Inside Oxford, Creedmoor, Butner, Stovall or Stem, start with that town's zoning office.

When a permit is required

Granville's accessory building guide doesn't list a size cutoff. Under statewide practice, buildings over 12 feet in any direction generally need a building permit, so call to confirm for your building.

Zoning and setbacks

Outside town limits, get your zoning permit from Granville County Zoning at 919-603-1331. It sets your setbacks.

What to bring

  1. Signed zoning permit
  2. Well and septic permits from Granville-Vance Health Department (919-693-2688), if you're not on city water and sewer
  3. Detailed plans, digital or one printed set
  4. Signed building permit application

Farm buildings

A building used only for a bona fide farm may be exempt from a building permit in county jurisdiction under N.C. G.S. 160D-903. Ask the office for its farm exemption form. Electrical work still needs a permit.

Good to know

Drop off at 122 Williamsboro St, Oxford, or email the packet to the address on the county's checklist. Hours: 8:30 to 5, Monday through Friday.
