Graham County, NC Permits for Metal Carports and Garages
In Graham County, a permit from Building Inspections in Robbinsville comes before you put up a metal carport or garage. The county's own permit handout says an accessory building with any dimension over 12 feet has to meet the NC Residential Code. Graham is mountain country with mapped water supply watersheds, so check those rules before you pick a building site.

When a permit is required
- The county handout says you need a permit before you build, alter, repair, move or tear down a building, and before electrical, plumbing or heating and cooling work.
- An accessory building with any dimension over 12 feet must comply with the NC Residential Code, according to the county's dwelling permit requirements sheet.
- Work on a single-family home or farm building that costs $5,000 or less generally doesn't need a building permit, unless it touches load-bearing parts, certain plumbing, heating, air or electrical work, or new roofing.
- Setting up a manufactured or mobile home also needs a permit.
Zoning and setbacks
Graham County posts a Watershed Protection Ordinance and watershed maps for Long Creek, Rock Creek, Yellow Hammer Creek and Burgan Creek on the Building Inspections page, plus a Flood Plain ordinance. If your lot sits near one of those creeks or in a mapped flood area, extra rules can apply to where and how you build. The county doesn't post a zoning permit process or setback numbers online, so call the office before you order to ask about setbacks and any road or stream buffers on your lot. If the site needs a new address, the county has a handout on what you need to get a 911 address.
What to bring
- The Building Inspections permit application information from the county's Dwelling Construction Permit Info sheet
- Your property's 911 address (see the county's "Items needed to Obtain a 911 Address" handout if you don't have one)
- Building size and plans for your accessory building, sealed engineered drawings if the building calls for them
- Contractor information, or a Contractor Change form if your contractor changes later
Farm buildings
A building used only for a bona fide farm may be exempt from a building permit in county jurisdiction under N.C. G.S. 160D-903. Graham County does not post a farm exemption form online, so call Building Inspections at 828-479-7982 to ask what proof they need. Electrical work in a farm building still needs a permit.
