Floyd County, VA Permits for Metal Carports and Garages

Virginia

In Floyd County, plan to apply for a permit before putting up a metal carport or garage, because the county's permit application has its own lines for both, but no size cutoff is posted, so call Building Inspections to confirm yours. A Floyd County carport permit also starts with parcel approval, since the form asks you to show an approved plat or that the lot was created before October 22, 2002. For a prefab building, the form asks for a 30 ground snow load, 115 mph wind, Exposure B, Seismic Category B and an 18 inch frost line.

When a permit is required

  • The application lists garage and carport work, with dimension lines for each and an attached or detached choice for garages
  • No local size cutoff is posted on the county's page or forms
  • Statewide, the USBC exempts one-story detached tool and storage sheds and similar uses of 256 square feet or less. It does not call out carports
  • Electrical, plumbing and mechanical permits are chosen on the same application

Zoning and setbacks

The county's posted ordinance list shows a Land Division Ordinance and a Comprehensive Plan, with no zoning ordinance among them. That list is not the full code, so ask whether any siting rule applies to your lot. Subdivision questions go to the planner at 540-745-9300.

What to bring

  • Tax map number, magisterial district and directions to the site
  • Outside dimensions of the carport or garage
  • Your approved plat, or proof the parcel was created before October 22, 2002
  • Prefab design values matching the ones on the form
  • Estimated cost of the work

Farm buildings

Farm buildings and structures are exempt from the building code under Code of Virginia ยง 36-99 and USBC Section 102.3. Floyd County has not posted a farm form, so ask Building Inspections what to file before you build.

Good to know

The office is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but permits are not issued after 4:00 p.m. Inspections happen only on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and need 24 hours' notice by phone, with no same-day scheduling. Work must begin within six months or the permit becomes invalid. Fees changed July 1, 2022, and amounts should be confirmed with the office.

Common questions

Do I need a permit for a metal garage or shed in Floyd County?
Detached garages are listed on the application. The county posts no shed rule, so the statewide 256 square foot exemption for tool and storage sheds is the only size figure to go on until the office confirms.
