Dickenson County
Dickenson County, VA Permits for Metal Carports and Garages
In Dickenson County, the county FAQ says you need a permit for any structure over 150 square feet, so most metal carports and garages should count. That posted figure is lower than the 256 square foot statewide shed exemption, so call the Building Department if your building falls between the two. A Dickenson County carport permit comes from that one office, even inside Clintwood, Clinchco or Haysi. The FAQ puts new construction at $0.07 per square foot.

When a permit is required
- The county FAQ requires a permit for a structure over 150 square feet.
- The same FAQ requires a permit for any structural changes.
- Statewide, the USBC exempts one-story detached tool and storage sheds of 256 square feet or less, and it does not call out carports.
- The Building Department also handles erosion and sediment permits and inspections.
Zoning and setbacks
The county site lists a Subdivision Ordinance, but we did not find a zoning page or setback numbers on the building pages. Ask the Building Department whether any land use review applies to your lot before you set the building's location.
What to bring
- Building size in square feet
- Property location, including whether it is in a town
- Health department or DEQ approval, if your project needs it
Farm buildings
Farm buildings and structures are exempt from the building code under Code of Virginia ยง 36-99 and USBC Section 102.3. No farm form turned up on the Building Department page, so ask the office in Clintwood what it wants on file before you build.
Good to know
The office is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The county's FAQ says that once health department or DEQ approval is in hand, the application takes about 15 to 30 minutes and the permit usually issues in about 15 minutes. Its USBC ordinance sets residential new construction at $0.07 per square foot and commercial at $0.15. Mail goes to P.O. Box 733.
