In Danville, plan on a building permit for a metal carport or garage unless the Inspections Division tells you otherwise, since the city says most improvements need permits and we couldn't find a posted carport size cutoff. Call before you order. A Danville carport permit may also depend on a Zoning Clearance, and the city does require zoning approval for a shed or accessory building. When a permit is required

  • The city says permits are required for most improvements to buildings and structures.
  • Zoning approval is required to build a shed or accessory building.
  • Separate electrical, plumbing and mechanical permits apply if that work is part of the job.
  • All permitted work must be inspected before the permit can be closed.
  • Statewide, the USBC exempts one-story detached tool and storage sheds of 256 square feet or less, and it does not call out carports.


Zoning and setbacks

Planning & Zoning, in Room 207 of the same building, issues Zoning Clearances. A new Unified Development Code took effect January 1, 2026, so older setback advice may not hold. Use the Parcel Viewer to find your district, then check the Unified Development Code or ask staff. Inside the Architectural Review Overlay, new construction goes to the Architectural Review Board, and a Certificate of Appropriateness application costs $26.

Farm buildings

Farm buildings and structures are exempt from the building code under Code of Virginia ยง 36-99 and USBC Section 102.3. We didn't find a local farm form, so ask the Inspections Division what to file and ask Planning & Zoning whether your parcel's zoning allows the building.


Good to know

Inspections keeps hours Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm. The fee schedule is based on project cost: a $50 minimum at $1,000 or less, and for a $5,001 to $20,000 job, $80 plus $7 per $1,000 above $5,000. Permit Fees adds a 2% levy to all permits.
