Currituck County, NC Permits for Metal Carports and Garages
In Currituck County, a metal carport, garage or shed needs a building permit, because the county lists all three as accessory structures that require one. Currituck County's Permit and Inspections Division handles building permits, with permit offices on the mainland and in Corolla. The county's own FAQ says accessory structures, including garages, carports and sheds, need a building permit, so plan on one for a metal building. The county also sits in a 130 mph wind zone, exposure C, and handles CAMA minor permits for the state near the water.

When a permit is required
- Accessory structures: The county lists garages, carports and sheds as accessory structures that need a building permit.
- Wind zone: The county says it is in a 130 mph wind zone, exposure C category. Overhead garage doors, exterior doors and windows must meet a minimum design pressure (DP) rating.
- Flood zones: Any work in a FEMA Special Flood Hazard Area needs a permit. The county asks you to call before starting any project in a flood zone.
- Zoning compliance: The fee schedule lists a Zoning Compliance Permit ($25 residential), separate from the building permit.
- Time limits: A permit expires if work does not start within six months, or if work stops for more than 12 months.
Zoning and setbacks
Setbacks depend on your zoning district, so ask Currituck County Planning and Zoning before you pick a spot. If you are near the water, CAMA rules may apply. The county administers CAMA minor permits for the State of North Carolina. The Area of Environmental Concern covers land within 75 feet of the normal water line on estuarine shorelines, the oceanfront area next to the dunes, marshes and wetlands, and 30 feet from the normal water line along Hog Quarter Creek, Tulls Creek and the Northwest River. Building a structure inside those areas usually needs a CAMA permit. For CAMA questions, call the planning staff at 252-232-6075 or 252-232-6077.

- A site plan showing the building and distances to property lines
- Building drawings rated for 130 mph wind, exposure C, and DP ratings for any overhead doors
- Flood zone information if the lot is in a FEMA Special Flood Hazard Area
- A CAMA minor permit if the site is in an Area of Environmental Concern

Farm buildings
A building used only for a bona fide farm may be exempt from a building permit in county jurisdiction under N.C. G.S. 160D-903. Currituck's FAQ says a building permit is not required for a bona fide farm building used for farm purposes, but trade work still needs permits. Ask the office what proof of farm use it needs. Electrical work still needs a permit.
Good to know
