Caswell County, NC Permits for Metal Carports and Garages

North Carolina

In Caswell County, plan on a building permit for a metal carport or garage, since the county requires one before construction begins. Caswell County Building Inspections in Yanceyville issues building permits for the county, and applications go through the county's online iWorQ permit portal. Before you apply, the county wants Environmental Health and Planning to sign off. Zoning only covers the Hyco Lake area and the towns of Yanceyville and Milton. The rest of the county has no zoning, but subdivision setbacks and watershed rules still apply.

When a permit is required

  • Building permit: The county's residential brochure says a building permit must be obtained before construction begins. Garages, prefab buildings and other accessory structures each have their own fee line.
  • Fees: The county fee schedule (rev. 5-22) lists prefabricated buildings at $60, unfinished garages at $150 plus trade fees, and unfinished buildings over 400 sq ft at $240 plus trade fees.
  • Footings over 400 sq ft: The fee schedule notes that buildings larger than 400 sq ft require a footing or foundation.
  • Planning first: Planning checks whether your lot is in a water supply watershed, a flood hazard area or the Hyco Lake zoning area, and whether it meets subdivision rules. More permits may be needed.

Zoning and setbacks

Caswell County Planning (336-694-9731 ext. 6205) handles zoning. Only the Hyco Lake area, Yanceyville and Milton are zoned, and the two towns handle their own zoning (Yanceyville Town Hall 336-694-5431). In the Hyco Lake area, the county lists setbacks of 30 feet front from the right-of-way, 15 feet side, and 0 feet rear from the 420 contour line. For the rest of the county, the Planning page lists subdivision setbacks of 50 feet from the right-of-way on state roads (60 feet from the centerline of private roads), 15 feet side (20 feet on a corner lot) and 25 feet rear. Along perennial streams there is a 30-foot undisturbed buffer plus a 50-foot vegetated buffer, measured from the bank.

What to bring

  • Online application through the county's iWorQ permit portal (the paper form is for printing only)
  • A copy of your plans (the residential brochure asks for two complete sets of scaled plans)
  • Affidavit of Workers' Compensation Coverage, which includes the waiver for owners
  • Environmental Health approval: an Existing System Check if there is a well or septic system, or an Improvement Permit for a new one
  • Planning approval, plus watershed or floodplain development permits if your lot needs them
  • Lien agent designation if the job costs $40,000 or more (N.C. G.S. 44A-11.1)

Farm buildings

A building used only for a bona fide farm may be exempt from a building permit in county jurisdiction under N.C. G.S. 160D-903. Caswell's fee schedule still lists farm buildings at $60 per trade, so ask the office what proof of farm use it needs and what is exempt. Electrical work still needs a permit.

Good to know

After you apply online, the county emails you the fee and only accepts cash or check. Planning keeps office hours of 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on weekdays and asks you to call ahead. Track your permit on the Caswell County permit portal.
