Buckingham County, VA Permits for Metal Carports and Garages

Virginia

In Buckingham County, a metal carport or garage should be treated as needing an approved Zoning Permit first, since the county says building applications must come in with one. Any Buckingham County carport permit question also comes down to size and fee: the county ordinance lists garages and sheds at $0.11 per square foot, $25 minimum. Carports are not named, so confirm yours with Building Inspections.

When a permit is required

  • Article 4: structures are started, enlarged or altered only after a zoning permit is obtained.
  • Building applications may be rejected without an approved zoning permit.
  • Attached and detached garages and sheds fall under the accessory residential fee (Sec. 5-201B).

Zoning and setbacks

Accessory garages, pole sheds and utility buildings are permitted in A-1 Agricultural, and residential garages and sheds in R-1. Both show a 50 foot front setback and 25 foot side and rear setbacks. In R-2, accessory structures sit 25 feet from a VDOT maintained road and 10 feet from other lines.

What to bring

  • Zoning Permit Application and Building Permit Application
  • At least one scale drawing of the parcel
  • A statement on whether the structure is in a Dam Break Inundation Zone

Farm buildings

Farm buildings and structures are exempt from the building code under Code of Virginia ยง 36-99 and USBC Section 102.3. Buckingham's building permit ordinance has no farm language, so ask whether a zoning step applies to your barn.

Good to know

Dam Break Inundation Zone permits are forwarded to the Peter Francisco Soil and Water Conservation District, though being in a zone does not bar a structure. The office is open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Forms are on the zoning forms page.

Common questions

Do I need a permit for a carport in Buckingham County?
Assume a zoning permit, because Article 4 covers structures generally. Carports are not named in what we read and no size cutoff is posted for them, so ask Building Inspections about the building permit side.

Do I need a permit for a metal garage or shed in Buckingham County?
For a garage, expect both permits, plus a 2% state fee. A one-story detached storage shed of 256 square feet or less is exempt from the state building permit, but ask whether the zoning permit still applies.
