Farm buildings and structures are exempt from the building code under Code of Virginia § 36-99 and USBC Section 102.3. No local farm procedure is posted, so ask the Building Official what they need from you.

Good to know

The county fee list shows $0.16 per square foot for all structures, a $30 minimum and a 2% surcharge. Accessory buildings have no separate line, so confirm the rate. A manufactured home can't serve as a storage or accessory building here. Same-day permits happen, though most take longer.
