Appomattox County, VA Permits for Metal Carports and Garages
In Appomattox County, a metal carport or garage needs a Zoning Permit, since the county's Before You Build checklist asks for one on any new structure. Building permits come in at about 256 square feet, and the county has a separate Accessory Structure Permit form. An Appomattox County carport permit isn't its own category, so ask which form your build goes on. Town of Appomattox lots check zoning with the Town Office at 434-352-8268.

When a permit is required
- Application for Zoning Permit, $75 on the Planning Fee Schedule.
- Application for an Accessory Structure Permit, $.18 per square foot with a $75 minimum, plus a 2% state levy.
- Land Disturbing Permit application if you disturb 5,000 square feet or more.
Zoning and setbacks
Setbacks differ by zoning district, and the county says an application that doesn't meet them will not be approved. Your application needs a sketch of the new and existing buildings with the setback from each property line. Have your tax map number ready. It's on your tax bill. The setback numbers themselves aren't on the pages we read, so ask at 434-352-8183.
What to bring
- Tax map number
- Sketch of buildings with setbacks to each property line
- Detailed plans and specifications, if a building permit applies
Farm buildings
Farm buildings and structures are exempt from the building code under Code of Virginia ยง 36-99 and USBC Section 102.3. Appomattox has a real procedure for this. File the Farm Structure Exemption Affidavit, along with construction and zoning applications, and the county collects no fees and does no inspections. If electric service is run from another structure, you need an electrical permit, fees and an inspection.
Good to know
Applications are filed through online forms or on paper at the County Administration Building, and are typically viewed within 14 days. Inspection requests made before 10 am are done the same day if at all possible, and later ones go to the next day. Call 434-352-8183 with your permit number. A permit goes void if work doesn't start within six months or stops for six months.
Common questions
Do I need a permit for a carport in Appomattox County?
You need the Zoning Permit either way, because it covers any new structure. Carports aren't named on the fee schedule or the state exemption list, so call 434-352-2637 about what an Appomattox County carport permit involves for yours.
Do I need a permit for a metal garage or shed in Appomattox County?
Over 256 square feet, yes, you need a building permit as well as zoning. The state exempts one-story detached sheds of 256 square feet or less from the building permit, but the zoning checklist still says any new structure, so expect a Zoning Permit.
