Alleghany County, NC Permits for Metal Carports and Garages
Most metal carports, garages and barns in Alleghany County need a permit, because the fee schedule says utility buildings over 400 square feet, or longer than 12 feet on one side, need one. Permits come from the county's Planning & Inspection office in Sparta. If you're inside the Town of Sparta, check with the town too.

When a permit is required
- Over 400 sq ft or 12 feet: Utility buildings over 400 square feet or longer than 12 feet on one side need a permit.
- Garages and carports: The county has a fee category for a garage, carport or utility building, so plan on a permit for one of our buildings.
- Trades included: The county says a permit covers electrical, plumbing and heat, and the permit fee covers inspections.
- Code: Buildings are inspected to the 2018 NC Residential Code.
Zoning and setbacks
The county planner handles floodplain management, subdivisions, ridge development and watershed protection. If your lot is in a flood zone, along a ridge or in a watershed area, ask about those rules before you build. If you have a septic system, the county's owner packet includes Appendix H, an affidavit about your existing wastewater system and its setbacks, for garages and utility buildings. Ask the office what distance from property lines they want to see.
What to bring
- Building Application (check the Garage/Carport or Utility Building box)
- Owner packet with the Owner Exemption Affidavit if you are building it yourself, or the Contractor packet
- Appendix H wastewater system affidavit for a garage or utility building
- Building plans, or engineered drawings for a certified metal building (we can help you get these)
- Erosion control plan if the application's questions call for one
Farm buildings
A building used only for a bona fide farm may be exempt from a building permit in county jurisdiction under N.C. G.S. 160D-903. Ask Planning & Inspection what proof of farm use they want to see. Electrical work still needs a permit.
Good to know
Forms and the fee schedule are on the county's online forms page. The office has a notary on staff for forms that must be notarized. For septic or well questions, Appalachian District Health Department in Sparta is at 336-372-5641. This is mountain country, so ask about the snow load to design for.
